GENTING HIGHLANDS: Teachers and educators must be ready and capable of preparing students to enter the VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) world, said the Education Minister.
Dr Maszlee Malik said teachers themselves need to be prepared to face any possibiliry created by VUCA, so that they were able to educate children better and equip them with the required skills.
He said this in his opening speech at the International Conference on Educational Leadership and Management (ICELAM) with the theme "Leading Schools in the VUCA World" at Institute Aminuddin Baki here today.
“Over the next few days, we will work intensively to answer how education leaders can take on this matter, especially when we are into the 4th Industrial Revolution. But, before that, we need to understand and question what are the biggest influences in the VUCA world.
“In the VUCA world, teachers must overcome many obstacles and ensure schools are organised and optimised for students.
“Teachers must be ahead all the time and ensure they are able to understand technological terms to ensure we produce talented students with marketable skills,” he said.
Another way to prepare students for the VUCA world, Maszlee said, was for teachers to improve their relationship with students.
To address this, he recommended teachers to sit together with students during the Free Breakfast Meal programme which is expected to start next year.
“Sometimes we need to think about what kids like and not what we think they like.
“We need teachers to create more conversations with students and the ministry has been getting positive feedback from teachers, students and parents.
“What I hope for during the free breakfast programme is for teachers to spend time with their students,” he said.
The three-day conference which started today until Oct 3, was formerly known as the Regional Conference on Educational Leadership and Management (RCELAM) and is a platform to address educational leadership and management issues.
Also present was Institute Aminuddin Baki director Dr Mehander Singh Nahar Singh and the Education Ministry’s deputy director-general (school operations sector) Dr Ahmad Rafee Che Kassim.
